| I first heard of stevia when a low-calorie version of a popular sports drink was introduced in Japan about 15 years ago. (The drink is called "Stevia"). This leafy plant, approved some 30 years ago in Japan as a food additive, originates from Paraguay. Nowadays, it is commonly used as a sweetener in processed foods and is much sweeter than sugar with about 1/90 the calories! It is now being used as a preservative, as vegetables(mainly rice over here) grown with stevia pellets to fertilize the soil stay fresher longer. Now the latest trend is "Stevia produce", namely vegetables with aforementioned natural stevia fertilizer. These vegetables, especially tomatoes, are said to be much sweeter than ordinary tomatoes!(I know, the tomato is atually a FRUIT, but we eat it as a vegetable!) I will go look for some "Stevia produce" at the market today and report back what I find! |

| Never heard of it... but in Romania we have a vegetable (looks like spinach) which is called the same... |

It's not quite as leafy as spinach. Looks kinda like a...very wide-leaved dope plant???? |

Well... it is leafy all right!
We cook it the same as we do spinach... :) |

| Are you sure you're not thinking of "moroheya", the really SLIMY leafy plant that's cooked like spinach? That's from Israel, too, I believe, and it has been given particular attention (over here, anyhow) because of it's health benefits. I'll search for the proper name & post again. |

Looks like "moroheya" might be from Egyot. All I could find on it was that it is calcium-rich, low in phosphorous & oxalate, and is good to feed your iguana! :lol:

| My wife and drink wheat grass mixed with water and stevia every day. The stevia definitely makes it taste better. But usually, we use Splenda, because it seems to blend better and has a better taste. |
