| I was wondering how many of you prefer to leave fruit & vegetable skins intact when you cook? I am aware that a lot of the fiber and vitamins are in the skin, so I rarely peel anything(save for potaoes when I am planning to mash them!). Here in Japan, the people peel EVERYTHING- most vegetables, apples, pears, peaches, grapes and the sac-like membrane from around tangerines. (Then they complain about constipation! ) |

As far as I can gather, the pre-occupation with peeling everything comes from the fear of ingesting pesticides & the 'pollution' which directly contacts the outer layers of all fruits & vegetables.
These fears may be very valid in a lot of Asian countries but here in Oz it's kinda unnecissary  .......though I don't know how it is in Japan.
I know my Mum is reluctant to order stirfried leafy vegetables when we eat out because she's so sure that they don't wash the leaves as well as she would :? ..........
Me, I leave peels on whenever applicable  ......... |

The Chinese boyfriend of my Japanese friend nearly shat a brick when he saw us chomping on raw broccoli while we were preparing a stir-fry. They still use human excrement for fertilizer over there, so I can understand his shock!
Over here, the people are squeamish about pesticides, yet aren't most people aware that if an agricultural chemical is sprayed on a fruit that it will permeate through the skin? It's a paradox in a nation that thrives on MSG, yet another dangerous chemical... :? |

Yuck. I'm allergic to MSG. If I eat a dish with a lot of MSG, I'll get really thirsty, and then start sneezing and my nose will run.
Not all that common in the US anymore, thankfully! |

| A lot of prepared food products contain MSG in some form or other. Take instant noodles, for example- they're chock full o' the stuff! If it's not MSG, it's the other 2000 preservatives and additives that'll get ya! 8) For me, it's slow food, all the way! |

| Yup, the extensive roll call of food additives is as scary as it is long... |
